...... The flight that helped spark the civil war was probably the flight that brough Franco back from the Canary Islands to mainland Spain.

I have not been able to figure out what the historic 4 engined plane might be that is currently displayed in front of the old terminal. Can't find it on Google Earth, or just using Google.
Almost there, part of the answer...not in Spain though. Where did the flight that brought Franco back originate from ?

The penny drops. I misread and thought you meant the place Franco landed, instead of flew away from... but you probably already figured that one out. You probably mean Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte.

The historical plane 4-engined plane you refer to is Vickers Viscount EC-DXU. The second infamous flight, probably even more infamous then Franco's flight, is without doubt the collision between a KLM 747 and a Pan Am 747. This airport is also well known for its turbulence, which is why a new airport on the south side of the island was developed.

The island is Spanish though, but obviously not mainland Spain.

      • Not there yet...in fact we're a long distance from the airport in question. Let's look at this so far....

        - I mentioned the word "turbulent". Perhaps I should have said "Turbulent" ? The airport in question has a connection with "Turbulent".

        - Remember I said that it "had" 3 runways. Past tense ? Right now it doesn't have ANY runways.

        - What type of aircraft did Franco fly in ? That type flew a lot from this airport.

Chew that over for a while.

          • In recognition of the historical significance of the aerodrome, two local schools are due to be merged, and will be called The Aerodrome Primary School from September 2010.

            • Penny dropped again, this time a bit louder though. Could you not have given that hint immediately?

              Croydon Airport.

Franco must have had an impressive frequent-flyer account.

              • Well done, Croydon it is. An incredible aviation landmark which really marked the birth of civil airline travel in the UK.

The "Turbulent" history refers to the small single seat prop aircraft, the Rollason Turbulent which was manufactured there. The "four engined airliner" gateguard is a DH Heron. I could have gone on to mention that the terminal is now a grade two listed building but that would really have given it away.

This airport has (had?) James Bond on the pay-roll.

                            That's the one.

The automated "wilkommen zum Bonn, Köln Bonn" messages (already sounds like Bond, James Bond") is done by one of the voice actors for James Bond used in the German sound-track.
