  • Small Plane Crash in American Fork Canyon

    There isn't much to go on at the moment. All four people in the plane are now confirmed dead. The most I can say in my limited knowledge here is that having just been in that very part of the canyon, four people in that small plane seems like it would cause some maneuverability problems when pulling tight canyon turns like that.
    My brother and I hiked to Silver Lake this morning. Which is only a few miles north of the crash site. We can't say for certain, but we're pretty sure we saw this plane flying around during our hike. On our way out of the canyon, we saw emergency helicopters, ambulances, and news trucks parked just north of the Tibble Fork Reservoir. While seeing this plane flying around I thought it would be really nice to take a friend and fly through the canyon in a couple years. As you may imagine, I'm having second thoughts about that now. And I'm definitely not taking three others up there with me....

  • The rules for the night shot category don't make any sense to me either, but that's just the way it is. So you're looking for long shadows and the red-orange glow in the photo if the sun was up.

  • The addition/removal of a subsidiary logo is the same size, or maybe a little bigger, than the Skyteam logo. At least the SkyWest logo is....

  • The aircraft is low in frame, and this is easy to fix unless it's also very low in the original.
    My best guess as to how to fix the underexposure is just to bring up the shadows. Maybe something along the lines of the attached file.
    The minimum acceptable size ratio is a 16:9. Yours is thinner. Anything between a 4:3 and 16:9--or their vertical equivalents--is acceptable.
    I can't really point out any compression artifacts, but from my experience, saving at anything other than maximum quality will introduce the artifacts and cause a rejection. Shooting in Jpeg is fine. Shooting raw is good. I know a lot of people who shoot RAW 100% of the time, but I only shoot raw if I have nice colors that I want to enhance and show off (a particularly colorful or special livery, sunset/sunrise, etc,) or some exposure matters with very bright highlights or very dark shadows (night, bright pavement in bright sunlight, etc). RAW files take up valuable space, so that's why I don't always...

  • Would this framing be acceptable or is this just one for the personal collection? I'm essentially mimicking another photo here (https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/7249888). In mine, the plane is much smaller and very close to the top edge, and the same applies to the not so clear reflection. There is also a lot of dead space in between the aircraft and its reflection, and I'm not sure the river and the mountains properly fill it for photo standards. Also, upload standards have changed quite a bit since 2011, I'm sure.

  • I get where you're coming from. ISO 200 should always be a good bet noise wise. When it isn't I get a little upset.
    It's not clouds that cause noise. But when you bring up the shadows in post, a lot of noise previously hidden in the shadows is now exposed and distracting, and dark clouds are repeat offenders. If you use Photoshop CC there's a nice noise reduction tool under Filter>Sharpen>Smart sharpen. It's effective. Just don't use too much.
