  • A330 Landing Gear on an A340??

What's the deal with this engine test bed? Isn't that the A330 main gear? Or are the center wheels just missing/retracted?

c/n 001 - first A340 prototype with the first Rolls Royce Trent 900 engine for the A380 !!!! so nice with this view no ?. F-WWAI. Airbus A340-311. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

Couldn't find anything on this topic using the search engine, so I thought I'd ask.

The center gear is not in use as this aircraft doesn't fly anywhere near the weight "footprint" that would require its usage.

Same thing was the case with the DC-10-40. It has a center main boogie, but it is not always used, as several pics in the database show.

So depending on the landing weight, the pilots can choose whether or not to lower the center gear?

Correct. If the pilots don't use it it also saves wear and tear on the tires.
