  • Copies of Eastern Airlines!

In recent times we have seen the numerous, sad, and horrible copies of the great airline that was PanAm. What has prevented companies from copying or reproducing Eastern Airlines?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

Either someone owns the trademark or nobody wants to be associated with EA.

BTW, there is a J31 operator in the U.K. called Eastern Airways

Can someone kindly tell my what exactly happened to Eastern Airlines?
I don't know the facts on this one.

Were they not at one point the world's largest air carrier?

One word about Eastern's end: Lorenzo. I don't know the exact details, but Lorenzo was shifting the best assets at EA to his other airlines like TIA, had long "wars" with the unions over wages etc. Someone else surely can give you a more precise answer.
On the topic: Yeah, it is strange not to see a new EA. I mean, we have seen 3xNational, 3xBraniff and are currently seeing the 3rd PAN AM. Maybe the EA name is considered to have a too bad history, or maybe Lorenzo still owns the EA name .

There were plans in the few years after Eastern folded to start a new Eastern airlines, but those plans never got off of the ground because of the costs of acquiring the the name and associated trademarks and logos. I had heard that the company that was given the name and logos by the bankruptcy courts wants a decent amount of money for them, something in the neighborhood of $3-$5 million, and this was in the early 1990s. Some people have suggested that AirTran ought to get the name and rename themselves Eastern, as they have become the successor to Eastern in Atlanta. That's a bit of a touchy subject considering that a number of AirTran employees are ex-EAL, as is several of the top executives. The Lorenzo years @ EAL still have some lingering bitterness in the airline industry. When I worked @ AirTran, we had several rampers that were ex-EAL, some of them were longtime EAL employees that were part of the IAM strike that lead to the eventual collapse of the airline, some where the replacements the airline brought in the day the IAM rampers went on strike. These people would not even talk to each other, and if they had to work together, you could feel the tension. Some customers still remember the bad things about Eastern that they had to deal with, and that is something AirTran would have to inherit if they took the name. To me, if AirTran was to take an old airline name as their own, National would be the best one to use. I had heard from some longtime AirTran employees (I'm talking folks that were there since the early days of Valujet) that Valujet had planned on changing their name to National once they got a certain size, but all of that got tossed after 592.

You need to add another word: Bryan. The TWU boss preferred to take the company down rather than try to work with management to attempt to save it. Lorenzo and Bryan were made for each other.

              D'oh!

Sorry, Bryan was IAM, not TWU. My bad.

              Sorry for the mistake.
