  • Belfast to get direct Caribbean air route

BWIA West Indies Airways, the international airline of the Caribbean, has announced it is to introduce flights from Belfast International Airport.
The weekly Belfast service, which was announced alongside a new Glasgow Prestwick service to the Caribbean, will launch on 16 January 2005 and operate non-stop to Barbados and continue to Port of Spain every Sunday. Introductory fares will range from £299 in Economy and £999 in Business/First class.
BWIA’s Director Marketing & Sales UK & Europe, Peter Iland, said: “This initiative will enable Caribbean destined passengers from Scotland or Northern Ireland to avoid the long and expensive journey to London.
“We recognise that this new air service will make some of the most beautiful islands in the world much more accessible to a large number of people and look forward to bringing our famous Caribbean warmth to these new destinations.”
A spokesperson for the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Paul Murphy welcomed BWIA’s new routes and “the benefits for relations between the UK and the Caribbean it will bring”.
The new Belfast service will operate on Sundays at 3.50pm, arriving in Barbados at 8.20pm, continuing to Port of Spain and arriving at 9.55pm.
Return flights will depart on Saturdays from Port of Spain at 10.15pm and Barbados at 11.50pm, arriving in Belfast on Sundays at 3.05pm via Manchester.

Can I just ask what the hell makes them think there's a market with Irish passengers to the Caribbean??

There is NO WAY they can make this route a success without flying it through MAN, LHR, possibly BHX etc.

and in the meantime alienate the MAN passengers instead? Perhaps we can read into this announcment that bmi are going to outperform BWIA at MAN this winter, and this decision will just help bmi that little bit better!
