Pregnant baboon escapes at Bush airport
    By MIKE GLENN
    The Houston (TX) Chronicle

A pregnant baboon being loaded on an aircraft at Bush Intercontinental
Airport this afternoon escaped temporarily after the door to her cage
    opened.

The traveller was part of a troop of primates heading for a zoo in the San
Francisco area when -- about 3:30 p.m. -- she made her dash for freedom from
    the Continental Airlines plane.

"They were going to load her cage into the belly of the plane with the other
animals," said Houston airport system spokesman Roger Smith. "In the process
of loading, the door came open and she escaped."

Smith said the baboon never entered the passenger area of the airport.

Although pregnant, the animal was nimble enough to clamber up into the
rafters below an elevated terminal concourse. Airport workers were able to
contain the baboon into her hiding area.

Workers called Houston animal control specialists, who took special
    precautions because of her pregnancy.

"In her delicate condition, they wanted to be extra careful in getting her
    down," Smith said.

The baboon was eventually subdued and placed back into her cage. She was
bumped to stand-by, however, because the others in her group had already
    left.

"They didn't hold the flight for one baboon," Smith said. "They found
another aircraft to put her on."

Smith said he knew of at least one other case where a primate broke free
    from the cargo.

"You would be amazed at what people have to transport -- all manner of
    wildlife," he said.

Good thing the matter was resolved quickly.

On a serious note ; workers made the right thing to call on a specialist asap. The baboon is a rather touchy one in addition to being taciturn and long fanged.

              Baboon

Wouldn't that be weird to be in the terminal and see a baboon running across the airport? Funny.

Talking about escaping animals.... I once opened the hold of a 737 and stood face to face with a bewildered German Shepherd. The dog had done quite some damage to the bags. I found the owner and gave her special permission to enter the hold to calm the dog and solve the situation. She calmed her doggy and walked it into the arrivals hall.
On another occasion a couple of Icelandic ponies escaped from their cages, went for the airport restaurant and one of them stampeded into the kitchen. The entrance was airside because we took delivery there for airline catering. Was hilarious. Another funny one: once we just had offloaded a couple of ostriches, and a two of them escaped. Our teamleader grabbed one of them by the neck and jumped on its back. And off the ostrich went, with our teamleader bobbing up and down on its back. None of us, the team, tried to stop the ostrich. We couldn't, because we were rolling on the ground with laughter. And we liked the sight of it , to be honest.

Sounds like a story from BBC's "Airport." I don't usually get to see that show but my dad has Disvovery Wings so I get to see it when I go to Houston. They always have some sort of animal control issue on that show.

Not all stories with animals get an happy end. When in DLA, I remember some expats back from holidays in Europe who got a conclusion on a sad note by getting their pets handed back in FROZEN conditions. Back North, some baggage handlers forgot the rear cargo hold is pressurized but not heated .... I have a funnier one ....
A psgr departing Brazzaville with his siamese cat had to check in the latter as two other pets were already slated to travel in psgr cabin. The cat escaped his cage during the loading process. Not eager to run after this one, the handlers picked up a stray cat coming under hand Now the DC.8-63 (F-BOLL) is docked at CDG and at the erratic carroussel, SCANDALE, the cat redelivered was anything but a siamese-angora The poor guy was given a wide range of excuses, among others the cat
                        - changed its colors because of successive pressurization/depressurization cycle (rtg of flight UT771 was BZV-BGF-FTL-CDG, fueling 3 cycles) (my favourite !!!)
                        - failed to adapt from the climatic chain : hot in BZV, Mild on the DC.8, + occasional heats at en-route stops then cold in PAR ...
The guy off course did not accept any of this, and this went far up to the airline top brass ...
