Pregnant baboon escapes at Bush airport
By MIKE GLENN
The Houston (TX) Chronicle
A pregnant baboon being loaded on an aircraft at Bush Intercontinental
Airport this afternoon escaped temporarily after the door to her cage
opened.
The traveller was part of a troop of primates heading for a zoo in the San
Francisco area when -- about 3:30 p.m. -- she made her dash for freedom from
the Continental Airlines plane.
"They were going to load her cage into the belly of the plane with the other
animals," said Houston airport system spokesman Roger Smith. "In the process
of loading, the door came open and she escaped."
Smith said the baboon never entered the passenger area of the airport.
Although pregnant, the animal was nimble enough to clamber up into the
rafters below an elevated terminal concourse. Airport workers were able to
contain the baboon into her hiding area.
Workers called Houston animal control specialists, who took special
precautions because of her pregnancy.
"In her delicate condition, they wanted to be extra careful in getting her
down," Smith said.
The baboon was eventually subdued and placed back into her cage. She was
bumped to stand-by, however, because the others in her group had already
left.
"They didn't hold the flight for one baboon," Smith said. "They found
another aircraft to put her on."
Smith said he knew of at least one other case where a primate broke free
from the cargo.
"You would be amazed at what people have to transport -- all manner of
wildlife," he said.

Good thing the matter was resolved quickly.
