Southwest Airlines business alliance with ATA Airlines has attracted more passengers than expected, Southwest Chairman Herb Kelleher said today.

The code-share arrangement between the two carriers is on pace to produce more than $50 million in revenue this year for Southwest, Kelleher said in an interview with The Indianapolis Star.

The revenue figure is above the $25 million to $50 million gain estimated before the alliance was put in place in February. Southwest is acquiring a 27.5 percent stake in ATA, a bankrupt carrier based in Indianapolis, and also has obtained six of ATA's 14 gates at Chicago Midway.

About 1,000 to 1,400 travelers daily buy one ticket for two legs of a trip, one leg flown by Southwest, the other leg by ATA. The code-share arrangement is in place on 11 Midway routes as well as flights to Hawaii from Phoenix, Los Angeles and other West Coast cities.
