I use a 300D and am really happy with it, i learnt though after making the step from P&S to SLR that the lens attached to the camera is just as important, for a beginner i wish i'd gone for a cheaper D30 as its just as good then maybe upped my lens to L glass just a thought for you to consider..

If I were you I wouldn't even go after the D30. It might be a good camera and all but it has only 3MP! There isn't much difference between 6 and 8MP but a very huge one between 3 and 6MP.
If the D60 is an option: go for it! Looks like a good camera and should produce about the quality of the 10D/300D.

Thanks for all the responces guys.
And for the D30 and D60. Those wouldnt be too out dated would they? And would both of them be an improvement over the Canon Powershot A80 i am using right now? And would they also be an improvment over the Canon Powershot Pro1 that I was looking at?

I guess I'll be odd man out. I went with the 300D over the 350D. One, didn't like how small the 350D was, two, 6.3 mega pixel Vs. 8.3 mega pixel for hobby, vacation, and general purpose makes no difference. I've blown up many of my photos to poster size with no loss in quality. The last reason the 300D was $200 less expensive, take that money and put it towards a real nice lens. I've been more then thrilled with my Rebel and can't see having to upgrade for a few years.

Indeed I got the feeling that it might fall out of my hands every moment. It's so small! The 300D is much better regarding this issue but I wouldn't buy it, too, as it is quite restricted .
So, my hint for you: save some more money and get a "real" camera like a 10D/20D. If I understand correctly you until now don't have any lenses, have you? Then you should look at the other brands also.
The D70 seems to be fairly good and Nikon just brought out a D50 of which I also don't know if I would buy it . Sigma has the SD-10 which has the Foveon-sensor. Although the pictures are only as big as they would be with a 3MP-camera, the colour rendition and resolution beat any of the competitors even twice the MP size hands down. I did have one for a few days and I know what I'm talking about . There is a successor supposed to come out, though.
And the SD-10 is selling really cheap, at least here in Germany. But it might be not as fast as you want it to be, furthermore it's a bit clumsy .
Minolta doesn't have something in your price range. However, if you save some money and geht the Dynax/Maxxum 7D you definitely won't regret it. It feels much better in my hands than anything from any other competitor and you can adjust nearly everything without going into the menu. It suits me perfectly! You might have to send it in, though, as it has some issues with Backfocus.
Hope to have helped you!
The Dynax/Maxxum 5D was announced a few weeks ago, its around $800[SIGNATURE GOES HERE]
