  • EgyptAir emergency landing in Canada due to report of cabin smoke

HongKong media reported that an EgyptAir aircraft flying to New York with 313 passengers and 19 crews made an emergency landing in Canada due to report of smoke in cabin. It was inspected and no problem was found. It will leave soon for JFK.

Can anyone confirm this? Because I don't see it anywhere else except the web site of a HongKong newspaper Ming Pao.

Goose Bay was a happening spot, lol. Over 300 passengers and 19 crew from the EgyptAir 777 today and on Saturday a A330 from Minneapolis had to make an emergency medical stop. I'll assume it was NW, but the story I read didn't say.

        Add AA to it:

Around seven Monday morning, an MD-80 American Airlines jet made an emergency landing at Shreveport's Regional Airport. The plane was heading to Chicago from Dallas when smoke was reported in the cockpit. A passenger on the plane told KSLA News 12 that a burning smell was noticable in the cabin. Luckily the plane was able to make a safe landing. No injuries were reported.

And then there was the incident at BA:

LONDON (AFP) - A British Airways flight from London to Denver, Colorado made an emergency landing in Iceland after smoke was detected in the passenger cabin, the Foreign Office in London said.

No one was known to have been injured, and there was no indication that the incident was terrorist-related. The British embassy in the capital Reykjavik sent a team to the airport to help.

"Apparently smoke was detected in the cabin -- it was something in the galley area -- and the flight has landed at an airport in Reykjavik. It made an emergency landing safely," a Foreign Office spokesman said.

The Boeing 777 had 268 passengers and crew on board.

And not to mention the Alaska Airlines incident:

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Passengers landing at Long Beach airport on a flight from Seattle got a scare Sunday when the cabin filled up with smoke.

The Alaska airlines jet was evacuating shortly after touching down at 6:00 p.m.

Airline spokeswoman Caroline Boren says there was so much smoke in the cabin that the crew decided to evacuate passengers using the airplane's slide. She said three of the 140 passengers and one flight attendant requested assistance from paramedics for injuries they apparently suffered during the evacuation. One requested further treatment at a hospital.

No word yet on what caused the smoke.

        And another at UA:

AP - A United Airlines flight carrying 89 passengers made an unscheduled stop at The Eastern Iowa Airport Friday afternoon after the smell of smoke was reported in the cabin.

Airport officials said the Boeing 737, en route from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Chicago was diverted to the Cedar Rapids airport just after noon. Passengers exited the plane at the terminal, where fire trucks
        stood by.

Officials said airline mechanics are inspecting the plane to determine the cause of the odor. It wasn't immediately known whether the passengers would be put on another flight.

SO WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Is "smell of smoke in the cabin" a usual occurance, but now - in the post London foiled attack era - everything is being blow out of proportion? One more thing. Could "smoke in cabin" be code for something else?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

Must be a new trend.. Smoking illegally in a plane must be "in".. or people could just be paranoid about smoke.. They could say they see some smoke but it was just their imagination..

Reminds me of the months following the Swiss Air Crash off Nova Scotia. For months, a plane or two a week was touching down in YQX or YYT because of 'smoke in the cockpit'. Half the time I think it was pilots who were getting a little tired and thinking it was smoke. Most of the incidents resulted in the planes being checked out and no problems identified.

It's mostly paranoia. Of course there is always the potential of a terror threat, but still, this is getting blown way out of proportion
