  • Air Canada Airbus - "Heavy tailstrike" "Damage Substantial" Feb 5 CYEG

According to JACDEC, "On landing the aircraft experienced a heavy tailstrike and bounced before the pilots were able to make a controlled landing. Damage likely to be very high." http://www.jacdec.de/news/news.htm (3rd report down)

"The Air Canada Airbus A321-200 was operating as flight ACA157 from Toronto, ON to Edmonton, AB. During the flare on landing for runway 12 in Edmonton, the tail scraped the runway. Damage reported to date includes a 2' x 11' section of lower empennage skin that was scraped to the point of eroding some rivets with some stringer and bulkhead involvement. Damage assessment by maintenance is ongoing."

While unusual, it's not unique nor is it cause to write off the aircraft.
