Local press is reporting that Iberia will suspend its flights from Madrid to Gibraltar with effect from 28th September. The flight, which started on a daily basis on 16th December 2006 is currently operated twice weekly (on Friday and Sunday evenings with an A319). The airline has cited 'economic reasons'. There have been many reports of low load factors on the service and much speculation as to its future.
The current frequency of services is useless for business travellers - why not pass the route to Air Nostrum with higher frequency DHC-8 or CRJ equipment????
I was aboard the historic inaugural flight in December 2006. It is such a shame that the services have not worked especially as the government of Gibraltar has committed £50 million for the construction of a new terminal and other infrastructure. Again, we are back to flights to the UK only - Monarch (Manchester and Luton), BA (Gatwick) and easyJet (Gatwick).
