You beat me to it. By the look of the aicraft in the pic, must have been a heavy landing.

If you look at the photo from the ryanair homepage it must have been quite a lot of birds. The plane is covered by red spots.

Either that or one very heavy bird

On a serious note - I'm not one to speculate so soon after an incident but something to think about is that the result of the heavy landing/main gear collapse may be due to a problem (possible failure?) with the port engine?

Sure, engines are designed to survive bird-strikes but it appears to be a large flock that was hit.

                  Dale,

Not sure how true this is but apparently the aircraft was coming in, multiple birdstikes followed by an engine flameout. The crew then tried to go-around but the second engine failed aswell. Pilot pitched down to land the aircraft, which resulted in a hard landing and the gear collapse.

Looking at the left engine though, the reversers look open - Whether that's opened because of it scraping acorss the tarmac or not I don't know.

Or maybe he's just thankful that his crew did a great job and nobody was killed...

                    Post on PPrune...

at 200 ft on short final at (100752LT nov) CIO a multple bird hit occurred on a RYR flight from Frankfurt Hahn to Rome Ciampino.
More than 200 birdhits were counted (afterwards)
Engine nr 1 stopped (no power)
TOGA initated by PF, captain took over and after (0,020sec) engine nr 2 stopped
Put him down on the runway (a bit hard as you can see)
However NO CASUALTIES at landing (7 persons were taken into hospital due to neck complaints)
                    Crew did a perfect job
No paint programs were used to modify the photo or any ropes were used to evacuate the crew the crew asked for stairs to evacuate the passengers
The slide and the doors were openend by the recue services (see photo)
hope this will clarify some things.

It's a possibility that the port-side landing gear may have stayed extended after the hard landing (those struts are designed to take some rough impact!) reversers could have been deployed as normal and then shortly afterwards the left leg gave way - No-one knows for sure just yet.

declared emergency and landed but left the runway damaging main gear. The plane remained on the runway, causing the airport to get closed.
Err did it leave the runway then come back on?
                        Signatures are overrated
