  • Lufthansa's First A380 Delayed...

Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Europe’s second-largest airline, said handover of its first Airbus A380 super-jumbo will be delayed by several months as the jet’s manufacturer struggles to keep deliveries on schedule.

The carrier will take delivery of the world’s largest passenger aircraft “in the course of next summer,” Michael Lamberty, a spokesman for the Cologne-based airline, said today. Lufthansa Chief Financial Officer Markus Ott said in October that the airline was planning to take its first A380 in March.

The good news for both parties is that LH is not too upset (as they are probably trying to cut capacity where it can be done), but they have already (in the past) reached agreements with Airbus about compensations over delays (as did most other airlines involved). It also seems that LH is working with Airbus and have already agreed to a revised/delayed delivery schedule. It will be a little while longer, but at least we will see her soon!
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

I heard the latest delivery date should be the May 31st 2010. Is that already the delayed scheduled or is that outdated already?

According to Flightglobal the delay amounts to "a few weeks" not "several months".

Delivery of Lufthansa's first Airbus A380 has been put back by a few weeks, but the Star Alliance carrier is unfazed by the postponement.

Lufthansa points out, however, that the delay was not prompted by the airline.

The carrier has 15 of the type on order and is expecting to put the first examples into service in summer 2010.

It has not given a specific date for entry into service and a spokesman for Lufthansa says that the amended schedule is "not a major change" but amounts to a "relatively tiny delay" of a "few weeks".

Lufthansa had been due to take the first jet in March but remains coy about the new delivery date.

While the carrier admitted recently that it was adjusting deliveries of various aircraft on order, the initial A380 was not among them. The carrier indicates that this postponement has arisen from issues at Airbus.

The airline says it is still preparing for the deployment of the first two A380s.

Lufthansa is planning to configure the aircraft with around 550 seats, and the carrier is likely to operate the A380 initially to New York and Star Alliance hubs in Asia.

You are right, it's not a huge loss of time. I have to wonder, though, with this revised schedule, will LH be able to debut aircraft in greater succession (i.e. more quickly) than before (because of the new schedule)? In this way, we might be able to see LH launch A380s to many cities in quick succession as well.

The main things that I took away from the article was that despite delays on Airbus' behalf, LH was not too upset (because of the current market). Also, another issue is that again we are seeing problems with A380 production and I wonder why, as it seemed as if they overcame their initial teething errors earlier. But at least we are not having them have to shell out more compensation packages for the delays (as of yet).
