  • 100th Anniversary Of 1st Flight In South Australia

Wednesday 17th March 2010 is the 100th anniversary of powered controlled flight in South Australia.
On this date 100 years ago Fred Custance flew a Bleriot monoplane from a paddock at Bolivar, north of Adelaide South Austalia.
After take off he was reported as doing a couple of circuits of the paddock before trying to land. But crashed when he tried to land. He only suffered minor injuries, but the aircraft was severely damaged. It was taken back to Adelaide for repairs but was later destroyed in a fire. From my understanding, only the engine survives to this day.

More information can be found here.

    Parafield Airport
    17th March 2010
    Cessna 182Q VH-KGG

8 of us assembled at Parafield Airport in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.
The flight was organized by the West Beach Aviation Group and the Air Mail Society of Australia.
We gathered in front of the Cessna that would do the flights today (it went up twice with four on board). Photos were taken with a commemorative sign for this event.
Since I was on the second flight we saw the first flight leave and went back inside to await the return.

Next it was our turn I was sat in the back. Once we were all strapped in, it was time to go.
We taxied to the far end of the runway, stopping briefly in a runup area to check the engine, and then were soon on our way.

Takeoff was smooth with very little turbulence and the entire flight was like that.
The site of the supposedly first flight has now been built on with a factory and houses, so it was a bit hard for us to see. Did a few orbits of the old site, clockwise and anti clockwise and then soon headed back to the airport.

The factory with the white roof top centre of photo was the site of the first flight 100 years ago.

We then drove to the site where a plaque on a stone is located and a picture of the aircraft is painted on a concrete block.
