More info here from a New England TV station/AP article scooping the BBC. Go figure..

Millions of college students, even at “elite” schools, deal with hunger. A recent study estimates nearly 45 percent of community college students report some degree of food insecurity. Catherine D’Amato, President and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank, and Pam Eddinger, President of Bunker Hill Community College, join Sue to discuss how to address the hunger problem.

MOSCOW (AP) - A Russian passenger airliner crashed Sunday night while trying to land at the airport in the city of Kazan and officials said all 50 people aboard were killed.

The Boeing 737 belonging to Tatarstan Airlines crashed about 7:20 p.m. local time (1520 GMT; 10:20 a.m. EST). There were no immediate indications of what may have caused the crash. Weather in the city soon after the crash was reported to be light precipitation and winds of about 8 meters per second (18 mph).

Kazan is about 720 kilometers (450 miles) east of Moscow, where the flight originated.

A spokeswoman for the Emergencies Ministry, Irina Rossius, said there were 44 passengers and six crew members aboard and all had been killed.

Russia's last plane crash came in January, when a Russian-made Tupolev belonging to Red Wings airline careered off the runway at Moscow's Vnukovo airport, rolled across a snowy field and slammed into the slope of a nearby highway, breaking into pieces and catching fire. Investigators say equipment failure caused the crash, which killed five people.

BBC journalism is in a quality nose-dive these days.
"Exploded on impact", for instance, is a typical 5 miles-off eye-witness description of most airplane crashes.
Sad news about the pax & crew though.

            More from the BBC :

There were no immediate indications of what may have led to the crash, but reports said the pilot had already tried to land twice before - and crashed on the third attempt.

The airport in Kazan - the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan - has been closed since the accident.

The BBC's Daniel Sandford, in Moscow, says that although some of Russia's biggest airlines now have very good reputations, frequent crashes by smaller operators mean the country has one of the worst air safety records in the world.

This plus the photo below it = parlour speculation of good ole minimum busting and encounters with extra dense cumulus clouds.

Confirmed deaths stand at 50; 44 passengers and 6 crew.

Of note, on board, was the President of Tartarstan's son, Irek Minnikhanov and head of Tatarstan's Federal Security Service regional office, Aleksandr Antonov.

Indeed a tragic event. May the families of those departed find comfort and peace.
