    Are there any major routes that still require quads (i.e. non-ETOPS capable routes) thus would keep quads active in a fleet for a while?

    Keep in mind that ETOPS technically no longer exists... at least, not as we knew it throughout the '80s-00s.

    So the answer is, again by all technicalities: no.

    That doesn't mean that every nation is going allow twins to fly 5hr+ diversion routes though, just because they're capable/certified.

    I was just thinking about niche routes (such as the ones that were done from Southern South America to Australia and New Zealand) that required the A340 or 747 to operate. I can't think of other routes that would require the same clearance though...

    BA just announced that they will switch from a 777 to a 747 next March on their LHR-DEN-LHR route.

    The topic is on who is phasing out 747s from their fleet, not who is removing them from a route.

    Flynas have again three 744s in their fleet leased for Hajj I guess.

    Both Lion Air Indonesia 744s are out of service and stored.

    It really doesn't have anything to do with the fences, the 744's were needed and originally they were going to start phasing them out a couple years ago. The fences are gone on Jan 1, 2015.

    KLM.
    Lufthansa.
    Qantas

    and our partner for the US Westcoast...
    United Airlines.

    Back on topic. LUNN, you've forgotten one 747SP, which still is in the air. I'll stay with my approach,
    a list of 747s which still are in the air.

    SOFIA is one of them. Btw, 747s are female, aren't they. Sofia, Pia, ...

    And in case of this bird, we should say, she could be in the air. But somehow, she's not cleared for t/o today.

    There are many 747SP still flying but I have only listed airline service ones as you had asked for.

    SOFIA is a NASA project that uses 747SP.

    Mahan 744s are grounded and being sold because they were acquired illegally, why they cant fly domestic is not known, but anyways they are going with one or two already sold to Smile Air in Ghana.

    All the Mahan fleet is aquired illegaly.

    The 744's are in need of a D-check. They where planned to get that at AMS a while ago but that was cancelled. There where fears they would be impounded.

    Wouldn't surprise me that Smile Air is just another front to get them in the air again on Mahan routes.

    Now confirmed Yemen govt. 747SP in Yemenia Airways livery destroyed completly by fire in April http://imagehosting.io/images/2015/07/19/Yemenia6.jpg

    And PIA is pronounced as P-I-A an acronym, not Pia a name.
