  • Space Shuttle Landing

    Hi everyone

I was watching 'The Core' the other day, and had a little idea. Basically one part of the movie the Space Shuttle had to land in the LA River because it was too far away from Edwards AFB.

Does anybody know how much would it cost to either get the space shuttle out of there and back to the takeoff site or how much it would cost if it landed at another airport other than Edwards AFB such as LAX, LAS, SFO etc.?

Just wondered and couldn't find anything in any other forums.

If the Orbiter had to land on water it would be destroyed

If the orbiter landed safely at any friendly airport of sufficient length around the world it could be reloaded onto the 747 carrier aircraft and flown back to the US. All equipment needed could be flown on the 747. This procedure was planned for, but never used. The White Sands runway was used for one orbiter landing.
