  • Sri Lankan A350 tail painted

That was quick, I thought they wernt due for a couple of years or the order was being cancelled but here it is.

Airbus A350-900XWB C/N 55, what was to become 4R-XWB of SriLankan Airlines after being rolled off the assembly line in Toulouse. The SriLankan government however is looking to cancel their order for this aircraft in order to ease the mounting loses at the airline so the future ownership of this aircraft is uncertain to say the least. This aircraft is yet to have a test registration applied to it. ***UPDATE*** This aircraft will be soon delivered to Sichuan Airlines

I wanted to reply, from the start of the post - that I was afraid of that very thing happening.

The A330-300s have the legs to make LHR - and that is perhaps their furthest destination. With the departure of the A340s, and the A330's impressive capabilities - SriLankan went for the A350 (which was a logical step if growth remained, as projected, back then). However, they A330NEO (if needed...) would be a better platform for growth. It's sad to see the A350s not find a home with SriLankan, but they won't be sitting there for long waiting for a home, either.

Sri Lanka will pay $170 million to AerCap Holdings NV (AER.N), the world's largest independent aircraft leasing company, for cancelling four A350s ordered by the previous government, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said on Tuesday.

The move comes as the government is in the process of finalizing a partner to revive the national carrier. It canceled four of eight A350 aircraft orders with Airbus Group SE (AIR.PA).

"The cost will be $170 million for the cancellation and it will be paid for AerCap," the finance minister told Reuters.

Karunanayake later told the parliament that the state-run Sri Lankan Airlines do not require A350s as its longest flight time is around 10 hours.

Government officials have said the remaining four A350s are scheduled to be delivered towards 2020 but the government is yet to take a decision on them.

Ouch! At least the A350s won't sit too much longer now...
