  • 5D mark II + Canon EF 100-400 IS Mark II

    Hi chaps,

I am looking for the best settings for this combo.
    Can you help me please?

What setting do you use for the 5D mark II? Any experience using the 5D mark II with the 100-400 L is Mark II?

    Many thanks

There is nothing special about this combo. On my EOS 5DIII with 100-400 IS L I use:
    - AV, set to f/8 as a starter, using any settings between 7.1 and 11
    - Exp. comp +1/3
    - RAW
    - ISO 100 or 200, if light permits to get the speeds I need
    - Mostly AV Servo

    That's about it.

There are many good tricks to make an exceptional combo even more than that. I never tried those, as I didn't need them so far, but they are sure worth a try if you want to experiment.

well, I'am very very glad to find more people asking about that combo.

Currently using MarkII and Tamron 70-300VC. I think that combo is the best for me, however my Tamron lens is not very efficient beyond 200mm. that's why looking for 100-400 IS L. Anyway, after taking my 100-400, I am able to use full with of the lens.

      Waiting more comment about that

what is the advantages and disadvantages sides of the combination / 400mm IS L ?

          Hi,

I need more focal length than 200mm and of course if you're using a full frame camera.

The 100-400 a great lens. I had the tamron as well but the is (VC) jumped very often and that was tedious for me.

The old 100-400 is great until 300mm and the new one is sharp even 400mm.

From some months I am experimenting focus problems, soft images and due to those reasons I sold the old 100-400 and my lovely 7D. I bought the 5D and the new 100-400. Everything changed but still I am experimenting problems with focus and a bit soft my pics.

          Sure the problem it's me

            Hell Espinosa ,
I have the same lens and camera. And i usually i used M Mode .
And if the weather and light condition is pretty good i will us F/8 to F/9 because i found that at this setting the sharpness of this lens is better than others.
Shutter speed : 1/500 - 1/650 (If the light condition is ok) .
ISO: 100 - 160 , if the light condition is lower than normal i will use higher than 160.
            File Format : RAW
FOCUS Way : AI Servo and use single center point to focus the airplane because it is faster than using multiple points.
Actually, most of this setting you can change anytime because you need to change them according to your situation. These just a reference i think.

            Cheers,
            Harry

              Good morning Harry

Thank you so much for your reply.
I shoot more or less like you except the manual mode.

I know 5D mk2 isn't a fast camera. Sometimes I shoot about 1/1000 and pics are like blurry and sometimes shooting about 1/500 pics are sharpen sharpen.

I don't know if I am the problem or the camera is too old for shooting with the 100-400mm mk2 lens

              Are you experimenting something similar?

              Cheers

                Hello, Espinosa
Sorry for the delay. To be honest ,i didn't experiment it yet and i seldom use 1/1000 speed. As i said before i usually use 1/500 - 1/650. And i don't consider that shutter speed will be associated with sharpness but i do know the Aperture will affect the sharpness . But i have used all aperture to take photos but didn't see obvious Blurry. The 5D2 indeed is a slow and old camera so i recommend that to use single center point to focus plane it will be much faster and you'd better to use AI Servo. The focusing way i think is important. When i new to this hobby , i usually used other way to focus but most of them seem to be blurry.
                Cheers,
                Harry
