  • Luca Baresi- Editing/screening advice

    Dear screeners,
I always tried to post some pictures but all pictures were rejected. Now I followed some instructions from the Internet and wanted to beg you to check my pictures and maybe tell me if they now would be accepted and if not what I should change or do better.

    Best regards

    Luca

Whar rejection reasons did you have?
At first I would say: „Light conditions not good enough“?

Unfortunately, none of them have chances of being accepted:
      1) dark, soft, slightly leaning to the right
      2) dark, soft
      3) dark, soft, slightly leaning to the right
      4) dark, soft
      5) backlit

Thanks for the fast answer. But what do you mean with soft and what can I do against those problems, maybe something with my camera or can I edit the photos, can you give me some advise ?
I can use lightroom or Luminar and my camera is an EOS M50 55-200mm.

Soft meaning its lacking sharpness and needs sharpening or it also could mean your picture is blurry

          6.6 Soft

This means your picture is not sharp enough for the database, go back to your editing program and add a little more sharpening until you can get the picture to look sharp and then re-upload. Softness is usually a result of poor editing rather than a problem with the actual photographing. Many cheaper lenses will give you a soft image if used under poor light and at longer focal lengths, if this happens it is unlikely that any amount editing will save the image.

There are many better photographers than me on this site that can try and assist you, but here are my 2c.

Your camera and lens are up to the task, in my opinion. Both are decent.

            Try the following:
            * Shoot in good light conditions with the plane well-lit by the sun (the sun should not be behind the plane and avoid overcast conditions).
            * Set your shutter speed faster. Your Ryanair photo was 1/160. Try to set it to about 1/400.
            * Use a smaller aperture, such as f/7 or f/8.
            * Make sure the plane fills the frame when you take the shot. You shouldn't have to crop extensively to get rid of empty space around the plane.

A faster shutter speed means less camera shake; even though your lens is IS, a bit of shake can still creep in at a slow shutter speed. A smaller aperture means more depth of field, which means more of the picture is in focus (less background blur / bokeh).
Last edited by jvdl; 2019-02-04, 13:55. Reason: more depth of field, not less.

The photo is too dark, soft and slightly noisy. So, adjusting the curves and sharpening while keeping an eye on the noise is the way to go.

Luca, I think all of them can be edited to upload in the site. If you need any help just say, also read the upload guidelines.

In which way should I edit them, because I always did it wrong...

                          First steps would be
                          - level the horizon
                          - center the plane
                          - crop to frame to plane

Then adjust contrast, sharpness, resize to upload size. After that you may ask here if anything more needs to be done.

I will try this and then repost the pictures.
