  • Lufthansa orders 787-9

Well - they managed to surprise me there... For sure I thought they would have stayed with the A350 and only the A350...

It has not been confirmed where the 787s will go (Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian). Swiss and Austrian have Boeing long haul fleets, so I wouldn’t be surprised, but with the addition of the 777X to Lufthansa’s mainline fleet coming in the near future, I could see the 787 as well (they 777X and 787 share a type rating)

LH also purchased 20 more A350 aircraft
Reuters (3/13) reports that Lufthansa “has ordered 20 Boeing 787-9 and 20 additional Airbus A350-900 long-haul planes to replace its older four-engine aircraft as it seeks to boost the fuel efficiency of its fleet, the airlines group said on Wednesday.” In a statement, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said, “In addition to the cost-effectiveness of the A350 and B787, the significantly lower CO2 emissions of this new generation of long-haul aircraft was also a decisive factor in our investment decision.” Lufthansa also “said it has also agreed to sell six of its 14 Airbus A380 planes back to Airbus in 2022/2023 for economic reasons.” The German airline did not provide a purchase price, and it indicated that deliveries of the 40 new passenger jets are expected “between late 2022 and 2027.”

You are so few kilometers away from here. I thought you sometimes see.. not necessarily my avatar, but two or three or five a/c types which are in the air for the newsroom who you quoted.

A350 and only A350, for what. Fifteen A359 (until today, obviously the LH en wiki counts them..) for three intercontinental airports in Germany which are served by LH long haul specialists?
FRA, MUC and DUS. That would make only five long haul jets per airport. You underestimate the Lufthansa, don't you.

Plus thirteen LH-B744. And now you better don't ask for what. Lol.

              Plus nineteen LH-B748. Et cetera.

You see, the A359 fleet by now is one of the smallest within the LH (!), way smaller than the LH 747 fleet.

PS: Back on topic. En wiki says, the LH 78 79 was ordered to replace the 343. Everybody replaces the 343, even the German Federal President. He changes to the A359.

Only one 4 engined long haul jet is in the air since more than 50 years..

@ KLAX. Take it as a hint, when the LH en wiki (excluding all subsidiaries) says, twenty 78 79 are ordered. Very probably in LH colors. Otherwise it would have been mentioned in the OS en wiki, imho.

I just wonder when LH ceased to be a 'Boeing only' airline. 1985 or something like that. So. It seems as if LH will not reach that state again, 40 years later. 748, 78 79, ...
But during the next years, three or four LH pilots will visit Boeing to pick up one or two new jets.

The German long haul is alive, 65 years and still kicking.
The Gold Member in the 747 club, 50 years since the first LH 747.
And constantly advanced, 744 and 748 /w upper and lower EICAS.

Dear LH-B744, let's get a few things straight...

According to Airbus' website, Lufthansa has ordered 45 A350-900, 14 of which have been delivered. There is no mention of A350s for the other airlines in Lufthansa Group on the website, so for the time being let's assume all 45 will end up with Lufthansa proper, especially since - as far as I recall - there hasn't been any mention of A350s for any other airline in the Lufthansa Group.

This sentence should read: You see, the A359 fleet at the moment is one of the smallest within the LH (!), smaller than the LH 747 fleet for now.

Careful there... The German Federal president doesn't own and replace any aircraft like a third-world potentate or some Persian Gulf emir... The Bundeswehr (= German Armed Forces) is considering acquiring A350s for the Flugbereitschaft (= passenger wing of the German Air Force). And the reason for that is not the four engines, if you have followed German media in the past year.

Don't put too much trust in Wikipedia, when it comes to aircraft orders and placements... Sometimes the entries are out of date, and after all, Wikipedia has no different sources from you and me.

You need to get your historic facts straight. If my research is correct, Lufthansa was a 'Boeing only' airline for a mere three (3!) years of its history, between 1971 (when the Vickers Viscount was retired) and 1974 (when the McDonnell-Douglas DC-10-30 was introduced).
