  • Appeal for a Rejection

    Hello Fellow Avgeeks,

I recently had some photos accepted to the database. I had a few photos rejected: 1 for (undersharpening/soft) the second was (Vignetting not allowed). Before I planned to appeal it, I thought it'd be a great idea to go over the guidelines as well as pursue the forum first, instead of wasting the screeners valuable time to look at a photo that may either have a chance to enter the database, or not. They both look good from my perspective, but getting an opinion first I think is the better road to travel down. Thanks in advance for taking the time to check this for me.

    Hello!
At least for me, the Allegiant A319 really is a little bit Undersharpened, easy to fix, I would say.
For the picture of the Southwest 737, I tried some different configurations of brightness and contrast in my computer screen and I wasn't able to find the vignetting, I only found it using the "Check for Dust" tool. For me, this rejection is questionable, as I only saw it using the "Check for Dust" tool.
These are my opinions, let's wait to see another spotters and the crew opinion...

I was one of the screeners involved, so the 319 is indeed soft and really easy to fix. The vignette in the 737 is well visible, even without the "check for dust" tool/ Just look at the upper left and right corner, you can easily notice the difference , which of course is more obvious with the above mentioned tool.

Hope I have answered your question.

        Hello,

Thanks for the kind response! It looks to me like some of the areas could be under-sharpened for sure. As for the Southwest shot, I could also spot the vignetting using the 'check for dust' tool as well. Thanks for taking the time to help!

          Hello Flying Doc,

It's always neat to talk to the screener who viewed your photo, I'm sure it doesn't happen to often. I appreciate the time you took to respond and help! I will fix the Allegiant A319, nothing a little extra sharpening can't take care of. As for the Southwest shot, anyway I can possibly get around the vignetting or would it just be best to add it to the personal collection?

Photoshop has tools to remove vignetting based on lens profiles, etc. It's just a simple click when importing the raw file for me.

              Hello Jvdl,

I'm still new to the photoshop world. I carry a Nikon D3400 with a 70-300mm lens, which I used for this occasion before I got my Sigma 150-600mm. Do those fit the description for lens profiles?

Before correcting vignetting in Photoshop, it would be better to avoid it in the first place. According to the EXIF infos you apparently used f/5. Try using f/8 with that lens. Maybe lower the exposure to 1/500 sec and/or increase ISO a bit, for example to 400 instead of 200. f/8 should get you better results.

                  Hello LX-A340,

I will certainly do that. Hope it will yield better results! Thanks for the tip!

The raw converter I use has a generic vignetting removing tool, I imagine other software does as well. It's pretty straightforward to use for removing actual vignetting (circular pattern about the centre of the frame), less so for removing gradients that might just be mistaken for vignetting.

Another method here is, to buy a 45MP camera, switch the camera to DX mode and still get 20MP shots with the Vignetting in the outer FX circle cropped away in-camera.

                        Hi Alex,

I'll have to dig around Lightroom and see if I can find some tools! Thanks!
