Actually started in 1962 with a fleet of former AF Viscounts, rating my crews was completed in the UK partly because AF despised me from day and besides always did
But the more I grew up, the more AF feared me, as sooner or later I too ultimately carried more passengers than the flag carrier, with just 54 planes !!! :P
Should R J P would not have well guessed my next clue would have been
The flag carrier of my country got a majority stake of mine thanks to a bloody financial avatar (ie AF took control of IT by purshasing UT and altogether UT's 36% stake in IT adding to other 36 % held by AF !!! )

      Time for another

I am one of the oldest South American airlines flying
But I am neither Avianca nor Varig
I can be regarded as a very long 727 established operator

      Now it's yours, good guessing
      Alain

        Aerolineas Argentinas?
"The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."

-- The LA Times, in a review of 'Flightplan'

        • Sorry Tanuj, I am not Aerolineas Argentinas,
About the clue related to the 727, I really mean it
-I was among the early customer of 727, pre-80s
-unlike most other including ARG, I still operate the type.
          Keep going, you're not far.
          Regards
          Alain

              Congratulations

              Time for another
I was also born out of the split of a three-national flag carrier
I tried my luck in service Europe twice, first with a 707, then years later with a 762.
I bet RJP already found it
              Good guesses
              regards

                  • No it's not Kenya Airways, which never flew 762s in its own colors and which has been serving Europe since day 1 without any interruption
                    But you are not far

You are right to go for Air Tanzania

Born from the split of East African
Tried to enter the European market first in 1980 with 707-331 coal-burner N762TW lsd from Caledonian Leasing (nothing to see with B.CAL) and operated on routes DAR-ZRH-LGW and DAR-FRA-LGW, this was short-lived as was the next try involving 767-260 ET-AIZ wet leased from ET but painted in full TC c/s as was btw the 707. Due to non payments, ET abruptly repossessed IndiaZulu just 6 months after the (re)inaugural flight

                        Another one

-Me too I celebrated my 70th birthday last year, but I am not AF !
-Btw did I was right to celebrate, after all, my name was changed 3 times
-My dark side, I collect losses of airframes ...
                        Who am I ?
                        Good guesses
