  • How Fast Does A 747 Engine Rotate

    Hey Guys,

This has been bugging me for years. Just wondering if anyone out there knows on average, on full power, how fast (rotations per second) a 747 jet engine can rotate at?

    I know its bloody fast

    Cheers

Forget that i didn't know you were talking about the engine.

    And its Revolutions per minute.

It's pretty fast for all jet engines...

And can you be more specific on what type of 747, what engine? There's a lot of different configurations.

I don't know about the large diameter fans, but the GE turbojets on the Lear are spinning about 19,000 rpm at 100%.

The little Garrett turboprops are spinning the turbine at around 30,000 rpm, while the prop turns around 1700.

The larger fans turn slower, but I would imagine they're still in the 15 to 19,000 rpm range in the turbine and compressor, and 10 to 15 with the fan depending on the engine. Many turbofans have a concentric shaft design where the fan turns slower than the rest of the engine.

I'll see what I can dig up in the ol' textbooks.

          The engines don't rotate...
The drife shaft and fans do rotate, and rotate at different speeds running from several hundred to several thousand rpm.
