  • Engine mounting

How do they mount the engine to the wing of the aircraft I know it is mounted to some sort of pod. Any information concerning the mounting of the P&W JT8d on the 737 and any engines on the large tri-jets say the DC10/MD11 or 727.

    Regards,

Under-wing engines are normally mounted to a pylon by two or three massive bolts, and the pylon itself by another set of massive bolts to the wing. For an engine change all bolts have to be removed, and the supply lines cut. Normally both, the engine and the pylon should be taken off separately, but there were cases where the engine with the pylon still attached was changed, which saves time and efforts. These bolts have about the diameter of a well-built man's arm!

If I am right this maintenance procedure was partially responsible for the AA DC-10 crash at Chicago in 1979, when the no.1 engine separated from the wing due to bolt corrosion which was not detected because the engine had been changed with the pylon attached.

More about this accident here: http://aviation-safety.net/database/1979/790525-2.htm
