I have flown on a couple of JAL 747-300s with JT9D-7R engines, and I seem to remember the sound like a buzzsaw during takeoff. Cruise sound was pretty similar to other 747s as I can remember.

The -70A was Pratt's attempt at competing with the RB211 and CF6 advances. The engine is distinguishable by appearing in nacelles more like a CF6 than an existing JT9D.
