  • American to fly MIA-CPT??

    Hey everyone!
About a month ago I overheard someone say that American airlines was planning on flying Non-stop from Miami to Cape town (13 hrs) using the 777, I know the 777 is capable of it but if they do fly this route are they going to be successful with it? Does anyone know anything about this? is this even true?!?!?

    thanks

Yes, a 777-223ER can do MIA-CPT with decent loads in all capacities...

...but AA has been talking about (but alas, doing nothing about) MIA-S.Africa for nearly a half decade now.

Crew issues, and the FAA's refusal to allow them ETOPS180 on the route have led to indefinite inaction.

What position did the person you heard from hold? Many people at airlines, especially flight-attendents are notorious for spreading rumors about their company which aren't true. Unless, this person had a high senior position, take this news with a grain of salt.

This would be very intersting! You guys need to read the post on SAA loosing ground with DL and quitting ATL in pursuits of picking up MIA.

Anyway, if they decide to do so then this would be great! Congrats if they choose to do so!

If SAA were to fly to MIA, then it would actually be bad thing as it would put competition in the market. Also, the fact that American has never flown to South Africa, so South African would probably pick up the majority of the traffic, causing American to lose out on the route.

American has to think long and hard before they expand into a territory they have never served before, unlike many of their previous destinations, they are dealing with one airline that has a monopoly on route for many many years, so their clientile would definitely need some sort of lure to convince them to switch carriers, most especially if SAA come to MIA.

Ok, if SAA started that route, then would most of the passengers be staying in MIA?

If they are then SAA would be a good choice for the trip, but AA cna have a lure if most of them are conecting in MIA. Are there any othert things that AA could do to sweeten the deal?

For them, yes; MFW has the 3rd highest number of S.African Diaspora in the nation; they're relatively wealthy, and maintain strong ties with the motherland.

Comped Elite status, comped lounge access, and free trips/upgrades for high-yielding business officials; are the norm.

Yeah, if SA will come back to MIA in the future and sometimes that I saw with SA was there at FLL from last 4 or 5 years ago. I remember when they make tech stop at FLL for de-planing to customs & immigrations for bound to ATL.
