  • Is it an MD-87 or an MD-88?!

It was only when I looked closely at the photograph I saw something strange. Why would they attach a MD-87 sticker to a MD-88?

It's maybe because the engines have the same outher fittings. Both built by MD.

^Either that, or the paint-shop didn't have an MD-88 sticker ready. Definitely is an MD-88, as evidenced by the lenght.

The engines maybe originally were used on an MD-87 but have now been transferred

MD-88, MD-87 is about the same size as a DC-9-40.

Its just a replacement cowling. I guess they just happened to have the 87 cowling spare which was not in use at the time ?

I suppose that's a logical explanation. I was hoping for something more sinister tho'

Plus the MD-87 has the "shark fin" tail like the MD-90 and 717 has.

YES !!! An engine cowling which had been dented to a point of no return and which needed a replacement ASAP, with notime to paint the new one.
