  • Spirit Airlines Introduces the Dead Presidents Sale (Fares start at $1!)

At Yahoo Finance, you get free stock quotes, up-to-date news, portfolio management resources, international market data, social interaction and mortgage rates that help you manage your financial life.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2006--Spirit Airlines today announces the Dead Presidents Sale with fares starting at $1(A) each way.

"How many dead presidents does it take to go on your next trip? Here's a hint: During Spirit Airlines' Dead Presidents sale, it's not all about the Benjamins," said Graham Parker, vice president of pricing and revenue management for Spirit Airlines. "We're offering fares that start with our first president - that's $1 each way! So holla if you want to spend a dolla for your next flight! We'll also have fares in honor of Lincoln, Hamilton (our honorary president), Jackson, Grant, and Benjamin, so click on over to spiritair.com and let the Dead Presidents take you on your next trip in style and of course, for less!"

In addition to $1(A) fares, Spirit is also offering a selection of $5(A), $10(A), $20(A), $50(A) and $100(A) each way fares.
Is Spirit serious?!? Okay, of course the number of seats is very limited, but still, this is ridiculous.

What a classless name for a fare sale, considering not all of the predisents printed on currency died of natural causes.

Good Lord, I barked out a laugh at this.

Against : sounds ridiculous at first sight and should have termed the deal as "Former Presidents" which would have been more gracious for everybody including the heirs...
For : good idea as a bait, and not so ridiculous as some fellow European low-fare specialists throw in free seats there and then. To date, SkyEurope offers 250,000 seats.
Verdict : getting a buck on such offers confirm that nothing comes up as free.

I personally like the ad. Sounds like they're trying to have fun and be very light-hearted. "Holla if you wanna spend a dolla" made me chuckle. If SFO is ever included in the fare deals Spirit has, I may just spend a day spotting in DTW or Florida or wherever they take me, I've been planning to get a job so I can try and go spotting around the country this summer anyway.

After all this is the airline that brought us the "Mullet Sale" (Business in the front, party in the back).

Don't think this is the best way to put it, but these days I guess anything goes.
