  • Burbank wants to ban FedEx and UPS

    From Air Cargo World

As Burbank's Bob Hope airport moves to ban UPS and FedEx from nightime flying for noise pollution, the airport has just won an environmental award from the Airport Council International - North America.

Bob Hope airport won the ACI-NA Environmental Management Award for its Hangar 25, the world’s first aviation facility certified Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The 62,000 square foot facility was constructed to house private aircraft ranging in size from small corporate jets to a Boeing 757-200, as well as their maintenance crews and staff.

The airport says it wanted to offset aircraft carbon emissions by using renewable solar energy to power the facility and its ground operations.

Greg Principato, ACI-NA President said, “Airports have many innovative programs designed to address the environmental impact of their operations. “Their interest and participation in ACI-NA’s Environmental Achievement Awards program is evidence that airports are making considerable strides in mitigating impacts to the natural environment and local ommunities.”

Coincidentally, Burbank now wants to ban Stage 3 aircraft based on a study by Pasadena, CA -based Jacobs Consultancy that reportedly took eight years to complete at a cost of $6.5 million.

The International Air Carrier Association (TIACA) has complained to the FAA about the proposed night curfew saying it would “set a damaging precedent” and hit FedEx and UPS. This is the first time an ACI-NA member has tried to ban Stage 3-compliant aircraft.
