  • Birdwatching: Old Hobby Made New

For several years in the past, I was an avid birdwatcher. It started with identifying bird calls on walks and escalated from there. The interest waned eventually.

Today I was on a bus trip. I saw a plane doing a landing approach. It had two jets hanging from the wings with a third on the vertical stabilizer. It had a familiar look to me, but I couldn't identify it on sight. As I thought about Jetphotos, I realized a new hobby cracking out of its shell. The "birds" are larger, their skins artificial, and I don't think their songs are as varied and musical. But the curiosity is the same.

Well, I looked at photos of DC-10's and at least the engines have the right configuration. But what I don't know is if the DC-10 was the only commercial jet that had 3 engines like that.

I'm guessing that's what I saw. One or two models I'd know on sight, but those 7x7 planes from Boeing and all those smaller jets by Airbus not to mention other companies, I wouldnt know at all.
