  • China Eastern Cargo Has Been Renamed as China Cargo????

Since when did China Eastern Cargo renamed their cargo version to China Cargo????

Why did they rename it? Are the new 744Fs replacing the MD11Fs for China EASTERN Cargo? Is China Airlines Cargo and the new renamed China Cargo are the same airlines now? Lets just say... people could say, Oh, here comes a 744F of China Cargo on final meaning China AIRLINES Cargo, but it is really China EASTERN Cargo 744F. People MIGHT get confuse of what airline it is because both airlines are called... China Cargo and China Airlines Cargo.

China EASTERN Cargo should go back and rename their cargo version as.... China Eastern Cargo... Period. Makes more sence to me.

Here are a recent picture of China Cargo 744F at LAX

China Cargo Airlines has been China Cargo Airlines since inception. It was formed back in 1998 and has separate call sign, IATA and ICAO codes from China Eastern since then, although it uses China Eastern's livery. And for a while, it was renamed China Eastern Airlines Cargo. But then it switched the brand back to China Cargo Airlines.

One of the reasons of it NOT being named China Eastern Airlines Cargo is because, errr..., it's not REALLY China Eastern Airlines Cargo. It's only 70% owned by China Eastern. So legally, it's a separate company. As of whether people will mix it up with China Airlines Cargo, if you look at the name of the airlines, yes, they may, but many foreigners are confused between the names The People's Republic of China and The Republic of China anyway.

For ATC, the call signs are completely different: China Airlines Cargo is just a business division of China Airlines, so it uses the call sign of China Airlines, i.e. "Dynasty", while China Cargo Airlines uses its own call sign, which is "Cargo King".

To make matter more interesting, Air China Cargo is also not fully owned by Air China. In fact, Air China only owns 51% of it. And the Chinese name of Air China Cargo is actually not Air China Cargo. It's China International Cargo Airlines in Chinese. But, to your point, the management of Air China apparently decided to adopt the brand "Air China Cargo" in English to avoid confusion. It doesn't use the call sign of Air China, too, as its call sign is "Air China Freight", but it shares the same IATA, ICAO code and livery as Air China (i.e. IATA: CA).

Lastly, Air China is now looking into setting up another cargo joint venture with Cathay Pacific Cargo, which may become a separate cargo airline from Air China Cargo.

Dosent 70% stake allow you to rebrand the company to your preferces? also will Shanghai Cargo be merged into China Cargo, as MU and Shanghai airlines merge.

Yes, of course China Eastern can elect to brand China Cargo as China Eastern Cargo if it chooses so, which it had tried for a brief moment. Apparently, it decided otherwise.

China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines are to be run separately although both are owned by the same holding company: China Eastern. So no, the brands will remain, on both cargo and passenger operations. And Shanghai Airlines will remain in Star Alliance while China Eastern will never join as Air China will veto that for sure.
