ANCHORAGE: Space will be created to add local sorting capacity.

Federal Express plans to buy the very first of the massive Airbus 380 jets for its cargo fleet and have them landing at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in the coming years, the company said.

The shipping service plans to add three of the giant aircraft to its fleet in 2008 or 2009, said Jim Hatley, FedEx managing director for Alaska operations.

"We've already got plans on how they will park here," Hatley told the Alaska Journal of Commerce.

Federal Express is the largest cargo carrier at the Anchorage airport with 10 jet gates and an average of 15 flights a day.

The shipping service handles daily flights from Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Business is growing in China and Korea, the company said.

Construction to add increased sorting and warehouse capacity is expected to be under way by 2006, Hatley said. It is expected to be complete in 2008 to allow the cargo giant to sort 16,000 pieces an hour, double its current capacity, he said.

The expansion plans are on hold, pending increased trade between the United States and Asia, the newspaper reported.

The expansion also should mean an increase in employees, though the company did not give details.

Michael Kean, transportation director for the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, said cargo operations account for 66 percent of revenue at the Anchorage airport.

"FedEx and UPS are both here because we are the center of everywhere in the commercial global distribution area," Kean said.

FedEx is also a major economic contributor to Alaska with its 1,325 employees and $52 million payroll, said Kevin Pearson, vice president of business development for AEDC.
