I think that AirTran will convert some of their 737NG order into 717-300s if Boeing launches the program. I do see the Star Alliance launching this variant, with SAS taking the intial a/c (swaping the 736s for the 713). AirTran will probably launch the variant in North America.
Air Tran looks logical, especially if they can swap 737NGs with 717-300s and avoid in the process a duplication in maintenance/training and als costs.
A major DC.9 operator, Northwest may be another logical customer due to the sheer number of nines to be replaced sooner or later. Unless they try gobling up Air Tran in the mid/long term and become a 717 major operator without ordering a single one on their own, just as with the DC.9.
717-300 may pop up as a perfect suit for Spirit and Southeast If they are still around.
Regards
Alain
