  • AA flight 1232 Chnaging flight path?

For the last few months Ive been tracking this flight daily and the usual flight path is straight from DFW over the Gulf and on to Sangster Intl. For the last 2 days it has flown to Miami first, still non-stop, and then headed south to Jamaica. Why would the flight path change all of a sudden? Is it because of hurricane season?

I do not know the reason but a maybe, because of recent turmoil in Jamaica, a refueling stop in Miami to preclude having to refuel in Jamaica.

Flightaware doesn't seem to show it having landed in Miami, only flown more or less over Miami.

Checking back on Flightaware the flight track does seem to have changed in recent days. Is it possible that some commercial traffic is being diverted around the Gulf of Mexico due to oil spill surveillance aircraft?

Yes and because the rest of the flight is out of flightaware's coverage you can't see it land at all. It wasn't supposed to stop in MIA as it is a non-stop flight from DFW to Sangster

I admit, give AA's size and # of A/C this is unlikely, but there is the possibility that for some reason on those flights, the company was forced to operate A/C that were NOT overwater equipped; thus neccessitating staying with 50 NM of the shoreline too.

            downsideup

What does that mean downsideup? Like maybe they weren't equipped with enough fuel or safety mechanisms on board? Also, on June 2nd, flight 1233 (the return flight from Sangster to DFW)was diverted to IAH after it looks like it had already made it to the DFW vicinity. What in the world?

BTW, the flight plan was back to normal today. Just seemed really strange

Maybe you haven't seen a map in the last 50 years. It would pass well over 50nm on the way from KMIA to MKJS. Especially from MIA to Cuba and from Cuba to Jamaica.

Isn't it like 90 miles just from MIA to Cuba? I know those rafts they build to defect here in droves aren't all that goddamn sturdy, lol

50nm from each coast would allow 100nm between coasts to still meet a requirement...
