Star Alliance's board of directors quietly gave its members the go-ahead to approach smaller airlines in areas where the group feels it needs a greater presence, Stephan Roth, Star Alliance director of corporate affairs for the Americas, said yesterday in an interview.
Smaller carriers will be able to access Star Alliance's 688 global destinations, and ties-up in FFP.
The Star Alliance disclosure came as the International Air Transport Association published statistics showing global passenger traffic on airlines rebounded in January to the same level as early 2001, eight months before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
