  • Air UK - A Tribute

    Hi,
In my 3rd airline tribute I wanted to write about Air UK:

Air UK began in January 1980 with a multi-company merger between BIA, Air Anglia, Air Wales and Air Westward.

The mainstay type was, for many years, the Fokker F27 Friendship (originally part of Air Anglia's fleet). Handley Page Heralds were also used (originally from BIA's fleet). In the early 1980s Short SD-330 and SD-360 aircraft were introduced with the occasional leased BAC-111 from the newly formed BIA who were flying the type on charter flights from Gatwick.

Fokker F-100 and BAe 146 aircraft were introduced to replace an aging fleet. The new livery which replaced the blue fusalage/white fin colour scheme had a blue fin with a half-Union Flag somewhat reminicent of the old BEA 1970 livery.

In the 1990s the fleet was replaced with modern types and when KLM gained 100% holding in Air UK the two airlines integrated their UK-Holland services with Air UK taking over the KLM Cityhopper regional services. The Air UK fleet was repainted in KLM markings with KLM uk titles.

    Thanks
