Confirmed - Mexican Secretary of State killed in crash

It is confirmed, the Mexican Secretary of State (also equivalent to Ministry of Interior) was killed in the accident.

Also onboard was the subsecretary of Public Safety, which is the government body in charge of coordinating the police and justice policies.

The Army sealed the San Luis Potosi airport, where the flight originated from. Rumours are that it might have been a terrorist attack from the drug cartels, mainly because of the high ranking officials on the plane. Only rumours, of course. Some witnesses say that the plane exploded on midair.

However, some officials mentioned that the fuselage is almost complete, which might be contrary to an explosion while on the air.

What I get from all this is that, as expected, a few hours after the crash there are a lot of unknowns. But it surely was a very shocking accident. Juan Camilo Muriņo, the Secretary of State that died in the crash, was said to be the second most powerful person in the Mexican government a few months ago.

8 people are dead - all passenger on the Learjet, and 40 people were injured on the ground, as the plane impacted several cars and at least a building.

Some video can be seen here, and I'll try to post links to pictures and news tomorrow.

An engine fell off a Mexican government jet before it crashed, killing the second-highest official in the nation, the Cabinet member in charge of the investigation said Saturday.

The government Learjet 45 was traveling at 500 kmh (310 mph) when it crashed in central Mexico City as it approached Benito Juarez International Airport.

Gilberto Lopez Meyer, Mexico's director of airports and auxiliary services, said the jet's left engine fell off when the plane was traveling between 250 and 300 kmh (150 to 186 mph), according to Mexico's state-run Notimex news agency.

An examination of the wreckage indicates that the engines were functioning at high speed, Lopez Meyer said.
