  • A Beach Landing? Well, He’d Seen It on TV

A little knowledge can prove to be a dangerous thing, thankfully in this case no one was hurt.

These things look so easy in Alaska.

A 24-year-old pilot with an airsick passenger who landed his single-engine Piper Warrior on Rockaway Beach in Queens on Monday night could not be talked out of it, no matter how hard an air-traffic controller tried, according to a recording.
Jason Maloney told the police that he had gotten the idea from a television program about flying in Alaska.

Brian, it sounds like you know a little about this.

Ummmmm? No, I guess you see this on the job all the time.

It didn't hit me though I just thought it was the "med school" ego and lack of real world "skill sets".

That article is one of the funniest things I've read in awhile. Thanks for posting.

Maybe his next aircraft will be a Beechcraft.

"I'm not going to declare an emergency but I will land on the beach ..... Well then that will be an emergency"

Also his engine was running a lil teensy weensy rough. Much like his brain

I like that pic in the last post. But unlike common Sandpipers that little birdie did not run from the oncoming rush of waves.

His plane looked ok but now? After a salt bath? I would love to hear him with not only the feds but with the insurance folks.

Oh, let's not be so harsh. He landed on soft sand without bending the bird so props for soft field technique.

What a waste of a perfectly good plane. If he was able to land and then take off (Like in the show "Flying wild") it would have been cool. But not in city limits!

He was not equipped with bush tires, nor was he trained to land on beaches.

                        Bone-headed move!
