I know not all screeners are the same but I've seen a few photos cut off with only the wing and cockpit will photos like this occasionally get accepted?

They can certainly be accepted, if done properly. Cutting the aircraft right in the middle through the main gear usually isn't considered proper, as there is no reason for such a crop.

Crop is tighter, but still soft, poorly centered, and incorrect ratio would mean automatic rejection

How do you get rid of halos

You don't (can't) get rid of halos. You need to prevent them from happening in the first place, and the first step would be to figure out what's causing them.

Wheat... my suggestion is that you check the material in the link below. But the short answer is halos appear when you over-edit or use for example the Auto button in Lightroom. Just use the curves tool in LR or PS and you should be OK.

Should all be double checked for dust spots, editing halos, and size/ratio.
