      Here's a shortlist for a second Atlanta-area airport:

      DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK)
      Gwinnett County-Briscoe Field (LZU)
      Dobbins ARB/NAS Atlanta (MGE)
      Athens-Ben Epps Field (AHN)

A site on the border of Forsyth and Dawson counties north of town was the unofficial site of choice in the early 1990s, but the Atlanta Regional Commission faced a large amount of protest from area residents; add to this the loss of Eastern Airlines a few years before, and the project was shelved. Some people have suggested that a second Atlanta airport be build between Atlanta and Macon (back when they were discussing the future of Atlanta Municipal Airport, a site in north Fulton County and a site in Henry County south of Atlanta were proposed as the site of a new airport [They could not agree on which site, so the Midfield Complex @ ATL is the result of that]).

        BOS needs expansion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jetblue has only been here for 2 months and It seems they have already reached their service captancey, they have 2 gates but usally 4 planes there at a time, usally the 2 planes that didn't get to the gates sqize in on the tarmac and use stairs to board.

Well Delta/Skyteam is getting their new terminal so won't that make more room for other airlines in the others?

Once the Terminal is finished there will be definitely be enough gates for the time being. Most important thing for BOS is to get that darn Runway 14/32, but with all the NIMBYs, it still looks unlikely.

Ps: Can't wait for the new terminal to open .

Have they completely given up on plans for a new airport west of the Metro area?

Maybe from Hartsfield, but Athens is actually already pretty close to the Eastern districts of Atlanta, and since the metro area is growing, it won't take long before Athens is just a suburb of Atlanta.

They need a high speed train for that to work out.

Why isn't Fulton County Airport on that list? Isn't there more room for expansion there than at DeKalb-Peachtree?

What's the private plane airport on the northern side of ATL near Dunwoody/Marietta area? I stayed with a friend up there and the airport was near her house. There were a lot of bizjets flying over all the time.

Traffic patterns @ FTY are too close to ATL's traffic patterns to really be able to effectively operate as a major airport.

The nearest airport to Dunwoody is PDK, which is over in Chamblee. As for the Marietta area, there's Dobbins ARB, and a little further north, Cobb County/McCollum Field (RYY).

Athens is practically a suburb of Atlanta now. GA 316 was lengthened about 10 years ago to reach Athens and make it a quicker connection from Atlanta to Athens (Prior to this, the best route was US 78, and that road is a nightmare.)

If Athens is considered a suburb, you know the city has sprawled out too much!!!
