  • No refuelling for Iran Air in UK, UAE or Germany

From today, Iranian commercial aircraft will be denied refuelling in the UK, UAE and Germany; the UAE initially denied this, but it has since been confirmed (although, presumably that is a more surmountable problem, since Iranian airlines can easily upload enough for both legs of the flight at their airports of origin in Iran).

Iran accuses the UK, Germany and the UAE of refusing to refuel its passenger jets, days after tough new US sanctions.

Apparently, there is a limit in the value of fuel sold to Iranian airlines. Mahan Airlines will also be affected. It's not immediately clear why other EU countries, like the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden are not imposing sanctions. It can be expected that Iran will impose its own sanctions in return, so expect bmi, LH and EK to be stopped from flying to Tehran.

It's just not their week ...

IR will still be allowed to fly its AB6s and A310s to Europe. This latest development is, of course, independent of the fuel-related sanctions.

You need to either read and/or re-read the article and re-pose your comments.

Firstly, the fuel imposition, has been in effect for decades. It has been ramped up recently, but for most of the US and UK (those that have been adamant about the sanctions to since inception) those sanctions, while being a bit larger, are not of much concern to Iran because they already limit business and exposure to both as much as it possible. As for the other nations, you are correct - there is a limit to the amount of fuel they can sell to Iran and still do business with the major western powers that support the sanctions with Iran. It's a balancing act for them, but honestly, with few Iran Air flights to VIE and CPH, and with little other fuel related interest being sold back to Iran, they can balance out, or cut easily.

As for Iran imposing sanctions based on these allegations, this is why I think that you need to re-read the article that you presented. If they do, this will show the lunacy of Iranian diplomacy.
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.
