  • Low Fare Skymarks orders A380s

Wow, one heck of a way to jump into international service I'll say. With only a fleet of 18 738s, this is one risky of a move by them to order such a large aircraft. I would thing they should have gone with the A330s first for their first large aircraft. For a low fare carrier, I wonder what the seating arrangement will be on the A380, in the 600+ range.

I heard about this and was shocked. As they don't already operate international routes, to jump from regional flights with the 738 to international flights with an A380 is just ridiculous. As you said, it's risky because it might not work for them, i hope they know what they're doing.

I wonder where they'd fly them to anyway.

I think that many costumers of H.I.S. (travel agency and one of the shareholders of Skymark) are currently transported by JAL. JAL is downsizing dramatically and Skymark will be used to transport their own clients to popular holiday destinations.

All economy? In the 800+ range! (If it was Ryanair, it would be in the 1500+ range.)

Austral from the Reunion is already putting 800+ all economy seatings in their A380, so even if Skymark is doing this, it would not be the first.

I am not sure about Skymark's ability to turn this into a profitable operation. It couldn't even run its 763s profitably so it has to downsize to 738s.

If an airline in Japan is to operate this type with profit, I would nominate ANA to take that role.

You know something....there are two places I don't want to be when a couple of 800 seat A380's arrive at the same time.

Immigration and the baggage hall !!
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

Well, here is its plan for the 388. Looks like a total of upto 15 will be ordered, and initial destinations will be JFK, LHR and FRA in 2014. Then, after 2014, YVR, LAX, HNL, FCO, MEL, BKK and SIN. Total seating: only 394, in business and premium economy (which begs the question-why not go for the 748 instead?)

.. and how is this supposed to work out?...a possible 15 A380s with fewer seats that any A380 operator/customer for a low-cost carrier with currently 15 B738...stock droping 16% a day after announcement is possibly a good clue to how people are taking this announcement. I don't see why not the 747-8 like Foxtrot brings up, will get them sooner, all Boeing fleet, and either way A380/B747-8, it's a huge risk.

what they could do, if this would be allowed, is that they could convert 2-4 of them into 900+ seat aircraft for flights between major cities, just as an example

                    NRT/HND-UKB/KIX (depends)

I dont know what domestic routes in Japan are profitable but that was the first one to pop into my head.
