How is < 50' go-around viable when you can't see the threshold?
How is it not? An instrument-rated pilot should be able to go around without being able to see anything outside the plane.
In fact without knowing all the nuances of the FARs I'd say if hand-flying (or autolanding with anything less than cat IIIc) they *must* go around if they're below 50' and can't see the runway.
A go around executed below 50' is likely going to involve a touchdown which is fine if the runway is where you think it is but not if you are mistaken. Therefore the hard minimum for calling go around is 50'. If you pass 50' without the runway in sight you are going to land on something.
