I'll be the first to bring up Pentax. Started with a K100D Super and then upgraded to a K20D. Now I am looking at moving to the K-7.
Pentax may not have white lenses with the letter L on them but their camera bodies are fantastic and the DA* Pentax lenses are strong competition to the L series.
The shortcomings with Pentax is their small range of high end lenses and poor marketing. Aside from that the equipment is great.
Since film cameras I have used Canon brand so I have had a lot of lenses and bodies, now I have a 40D with SIGMA 10-20, Canon EF 28-135 and a Canon 70-200 2.8L as my normal lenses, I have an analog Canon 1-N camera wich I still use... I want to buy a used and cheap Rebel XT to have a backup camera..still searching to get one.
I d'ont like to take pics with a pro. camera with big lens ect.
For me, a camera must be: SMALL (you can put it in your pocket), NOT TOO HEAVY, EASY TO HOLD. This is why I use my tourism digital camera for spotting
The quality isn't the best but I like taking pics with it.
Love at the first flight
The link shows only my last flights of these last 3 years and some of 4 years ago.
Shoot now with 2 1Dx's and a 5Dmk3 as a back up.
Mk4's are long sold and as great a camera they where/are the 1Dx is well...good.
Nikon and Canon do superb equipment and if you can't get a decent image with em then a new hobby would be in order.
Personally wouldn't touch Sony as the lenses lag behind in quality and build and the LENSES in most scenarios determine IQ not camera features.
At different stages Canon and Nikon swap and share the tech edge.
At the moment Nikon have better DR and Canon better noise control at hi ISO but they both give you the chance to shoot photos nobody would of dared try 10 years ago.
Sigma 80-400 OS
Canon 70-200 f4L + EF 1.4x II TC
Canon 28-135
Canon 18-55
Tokina 12-24 f4
Canon 40mm f2.8
Some equipment is pretty old, but it still works fine. I just got my 1Ds back from the shop because the shutter went out 20 or so photos before I left Copperstate 2012 back in October.

And the recent addition of the Fuji X100 which is fast becoming my favourite camera. So much so i can see the addition of an XE-1 and set of lenses soon relegating my canon kit to second string stuff!
