Everybody survived, just some minor injuries.
Now, it didn't overrun. IT LANDED SHORT!!!!
I don't know if it was pilot error, malfunction or what. But in any event, they were extremely lucky to, at least, have landed short enough. Had they landed a bit further (but not enough to reach the runway) they would have smashed directly against the short "cliff" of rocks where the elevated runway is.

Good thing they landed short of the runway. As you can see if they had landed less short they would have hit the rocky cliff. Any longer than short would have been trouble, eh Gabriel ?

There are three factors that stand out
1. the plane was brand new and could have shipped with a manufacturer defect
2. the pilots have arguably the worst reputation of any major airline and could have messed up and stalled
3. the weather was unruly with cumulonimbus clouds and a freak microburst could have pushed it into the water
to be 24hrs after the event and not to have the media even try to speculate as to the cause is unprecedentedmoving quickly in air
